As I write this, United Methodist clergy and lay people are gathered in Tampa Bay, Florida for General Conference, the gathering held every four years to make decisions about doctrine, ordination, organization, mission, and methodology for our denomination.

Another Easter Sunday and Easter Tide (the season between Easter and Pentecost) is soon upon us and we will once more begin our worship with the words He Is Risen! He Is Risen Indeed! We all know that the resurrection of Jesus gives us hope and assurance that death is not an end and that there is a better life, a better world to come. But what does the resurrection of Jesus mean to use while we walk in this world?

As we find ourselves in this season of Lent, let’s consider the words of the prophet Habakkuk:
“What profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes speechless idols!

Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in it.
But the LORD is in his holy temple;
let all the earth keep silence before him.”
(Habakkuk 2:18-20, ESV)
