In 2011, the focus here at Wesley was on organization. We looked at committees and staffing and procedures and we began to make big changes. Many of the changes have been made while some are in the works- but already we’ve created ways for our church family to be more nimble and efficient when we choose to act. But the question remains, what shall we do with these renewed systems? What good is organization without a goal or a vision? That is why I want each of you to take some time and consider the words of Proverbs 28:19, which reads: “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.”

A brand new year is right in front of us, and if you are like me, that means a fresh round of resolutions. I know a few dedicated folks who manage to keep theirs every year – but for most of us, resolutions typically come in two flavors: ones we’re glad we didn’t keep (like learning to play the bagpipes) and ones we know we should have (like losing that Christmas weight by March.) There are whole segments which depend on our seeming inability to keep a resolution. Many a gym is empty for most of the year, but has coffers full of membership dues. Many a bedroom has a treadmill which serves as a place to hang clothes.

Years ago, I spent the summer as youth director at a small town church out in West Texas. A few weeks into my time there, I met a 15 year old named George through the High School summer program. George was from the wrong family, in the wrong side of town, with no mother around, a father of no reputation, and a brother awaiting trial for murder.
